Saturday Night 5 July 2025

Motzei Shabbat 9 Tammuz 5785

The Rabbinical Council of Victoria is outraged and deeply saddened by the targeted attacks on a synagogue and an Israeli-owned restaurant last night on what should have been a peaceful and uplifting Shabbat. These vile acts are not only criminal, but a direct assault on every Australian’s right to live with safety, dignity, and pride in their identity.

We stand in unwavering solidarity with the East Melbourne Jewish community. We commend the leadership of Rabbi Dovid and Rebbetzin Rochel Gutnick during this difficult time. No one should ever feel unsafe while gathering in prayer or sharing a meal with loved ones.

We call on law enforcement and the justice system to take swift and decisive action, not only to bring the perpetrators to justice, but to send a clear message that hatred and antisemitism will never be tolerated in our society. A strong and visible response is critical to restoring public confidence, ensuring communal safety, and affirming that places of worship and community spaces are protected.

Our tradition teaches us to combat darkness with light. We draw strength from the enduring power of Shabbat, a celebration of faith, unity, and hope even in the face of adversity. We urge every member of our community to stand tall and to continue living their Jewish identity with courage and joy.

Together, may we turn fear into resilience, outrage into action, and pain into purpose.

We are with you.

Am Yisrael Chai.
